Stewardship Program

Successful Stewardship + Fundraising = Capacity Building

Raising money to support the church and run a stewardship programs is usually the most difficult task that any church or ministry faces. With creativity, smart planning, and some hard work, stewardship and fundraising will help to build community support for your church.

The word steward is used fifteen (15) times in the Bible. It comes from the Greek word oikonomos, which means “the manager of a household” or “the manager of a specific area within the household”. The work of the steward was called management or stewardship. Since the household and its goods did not belong to him but to the owner, the steward was responsible to the owner for the way he carried out his stewardship responsibilities. For example, in the parable of the unjust steward, the steward is asked to give an account of his stewardship (Luke 16:2)

God is the Owner and He has entrusted various gifts to us. We are His stewards, and we are also required to give an account to Him concerning the way conduct our stewardship responsibilities. Everything that we own belongs to Him. The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness the world and those who dwell therein (Psalm 24:1). He requires us to exercise careful and faithful management of the things that He has entrusted to us.

A mark of a careful and faithful manager is that he uses what has been entrusted to him in way that he consistent with the wishes of the owner. Christian stewardship can thus be defined as the Christian’s careful and faithful management of everything that God has entrusted to him. Another way of putting it: Stewardship is managing God’s resources to carry out God’s mission.

Secondly, our churches have failed to promote the principles of stewardship and have resorted to the fund-raising techniques of the corporate world;

Each member must feel a part of the body and understand how the body is benefiting its members and its immediate community. The church must have a positive agenda for fulfilling the needs of its members and its community.

In order to have a successful and vibrant stewardship program in your church, the leadership of the church must believe, practice, and be committed to the biblical principles of true stewardship. The leadership must elucidate and live the biblical principles of stewardship; they are to be examples of faithful stewards to their constituents.

The lack of education and training on the importance of the spirituality of stewardship for church leadership, at all levels of the organization, has contributed to the failure of the stewardship program in most churches. Since stewardship is based on spiritual principles, the spiritual leader of the flock, the pastor, must understand them; he or she must appreciate the value of the stewardship edification for the body of Christ and must personally play a role in enabling and sponsoring the stewardship program of the church. The pastor must be a model of a faithful steward.

Many churches run their stewardship program in manner similar to not-for-profit or corporate fundraisers. Fundraising is program-centric and project-centric; it emphasizes response to a crisis instead of an ongoing commitment. Spiritual enrichment of the membership is not one of the objectives of fundraising.

You Receive Not Because You Ask Not

Many church leaders have great difficulty in advocating the needs of the church. From time to time the opportunity will arise when the leadership has to make specific request of the congregation to fulfill a specific ministry of the church; the apostle Paul did it with the early churches in Ephesus and at Corinth.

Set your church on the right path to mission fulfillment and future success!

Someone must fulfill the commission of Christ; someone must carry on the work which He began to do on earth; and the church has been given this privilege. For this purpose it has been organized. Therefore, God has made His church on the earth a channel of light, and through it He communicates His purposes and His will. The organization of the church at Jerusalem was to serve as a model for the organization of churches in every other place where messengers of truth should win converts to the gospel.

The stewardship and fundraising are essential to the church today.
